Seek God

The writer of Matthew 6:33 is admonishing us to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you. It is sad to say that we tend to focus on our struggles and instead on seeking God. You can deduce from the narrative that when you seek God he adds all other things unto you. So in a nutshell, seeking God first is to your own benefit. The benefit is that your spiritual life will be nourished and your problem is solved as well.

When you also make the things of God your top priority, God will intend to bless you and an added bonus is, your heavenly reward is secured. In 1 Chronicle 28:9, we have been given a mandate that if we seek God he will be found. Is unfortunate that many of us think that God is far away from us. He is more closer than you think and once you seek him daily and continuously he shall be found by you.

What then does it mean to seek God? Seeking God means continually setting your heart and mind on God. You must be God-conscious and alert at all times. It also means God must come first before your needs. These two scriptures depict and give you a synopsis of setting your mind on God:

1 Chronicle 22:19a "now set your heart and your soul to seek the Lord your God"

Colossians 3:2 "set your affection(mind) on things above, not on things on the earth"

What does a seeker do?

1. A seeker looks for God in everything and gives God their attention.

2. A seeker loves God at all times including bad times and good times.

3. A seeker is the student of the word and we have been instructed in Joshua 1:8, to meditate on the word day and night.

4. A seeker prays at all times, whether you feel like it or not pray. I Thessalonians 5:17, "pray without ceasing".

5. A seeker obeys God and his word.

What are the distractions a seeker will encounter?

1. One of the distractions is interuption; in this new era, there are so many things that calls for our attention. An example is social media and its use of it has become rampant and disturbing. If one is not cautious, one will spend an entire day just browsing through different social media sites. Social media is good but if you allow it to interrupt your intimate time with God, then you must examine yourself.

2. Watching too much television is also another distraction. Once again, there is nothing wrong with watching television but if you make it a priority before God, then you are in error.

3. Lack of patience: seeking God is not a one-day wonder. It takes time, effort, and consistency. You must be patient and have hope that once you seek him consistently you will find him.

In conclusion, I will admonish you to meditate and ponder on this word, Psalm 42:1, "as the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God".
